WEBPAGE
All Cross Country Ski policies follow the
Anchorage School District Policy Handbook
Academics
All athletes must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. Because our coaches believe academics are the most important part of the student-athlete’s high school career, any student with a D or F in a class will be suspended from practice until their grades are a C or better.
Attendance
Attendance is mandatory to success. You must have the will to be the best you can be and that means coming to practice (on time and ready to participate).
Athletes must arrive to practice on time. Latecomers will be considered absent. You must be at a minimum of 4 practices a week. We will regularly meet from 2:20p – 4:45p. When we are taking the bus to practice, skiers will be left (and considered absent) if they are not on the bus by 2:30.
Athletes are expected to attend all practices and participate in the entire practice. Unexcused absences may result in ineligibility in future meets and/or awards. If a skier can not make a practice, coaches must be notified via E-mail, phone, or written notice prior to the absence.
You must have completed ten practices prior to competing. Also, you must not have any unexcused absences during the week. Any unexcused absences will result in the athlete forfeiting their right to compete during the next competition, more than 5 unexcused absences may lead to expulsion from the team.
Student athletes who are truant from school (do not have an excused absence from school) are not allowed to attend practice that afternoon. If an athlete has an unexcused absence the day of or before a meet, the athlete is not allowed to participate in competition.
Team Spirit & Sportsmanship (GO TEAM!)
When we lose we all lose, when we win we all win.
Make good choices. Athletes are expected to represent East High School in a positive and appropriate manner. You represent not only yourself, but also your team and your school.
Team spirit and sportsmanship is a very important part of being a Thunderbird!! “Skier of the week” awards will be given to athletes who exhibit spirit, sportsmanship, and/or hard work though out the season. Pride is something no one can take from you. Be proud of your team, your school, your coaches, and yourself. You are special, you are you. Dress up on the school day before a competition. Wear your uniform with pride. Wear your team Jacket with PRIDE. Stand and cheer for your team mates when they get an award. BE PROUND
Dangerous, disruptive, or destructive behavior could result in suspension from practice, ineligibility to compete or letter, or expulsion from the team.
T.A.D. Policy
Respect your team mates, your coaches, your family and most of all yourself. No drugs, alcohol or tobacco are permitted. Respect your body; it is the only one you get. Eat well, sleep well, train well and YOU WILL RACE WELL!!
Tobacco, alcohol, and drugs are absolutely not tolerated by the Anchorage School District, East High School, or the cross-country ski team. Use or possession of these items will result in expulsion from the team.
Racing
Races are great opportunities to challenge one-self, to gauge progress, and to see how much growth has been made. As competitive team, race participation is mandatory. Race results determine letter points, placement on certain teams, state qualifications, etc.
Earning a Varsity Letter
An Athletic letter award signifies both excellence and commitment to a team sport. While Cross Country skiing is usually thought of as an individual sport, they require the combined effort of team members to do well as individuals and as a team. For these reasons, our lettering policy is a reflection of the high level of commitment and teamwork necessary to create an excellent team. A letter award for cross country can be earned by accumulating the following points:
§ 300 points in 1 year
§ 450 points in 2 years
§ 600 points in 3 years
§ 700 points in 4 years
Points may be earned as follows:
- 2 points for each day of practice attended during the week
- 4 points for each morning/Saturday/holiday practice.
- 10 points for participating in a race.
- 10 points for being in the top 7 girls or boys in a race
- 10 points for being skier of the week.
- 30 points for maintaining a training log.
- 30 points for recruiting a new member of the team who stays on the team all season and who is declared your recruit at the beginning of the season.
- 30 points for maintaining a 3.0 of higher GPA during the season.
Participation Awards and Athletic Waivers
Athletic waivers and participation awards are given to all skiers who attend 80% of all scheduled practices and 50% of all races.
